Luis Lamadrid was born in Madrid in 1964 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Image Sciences from the School of Information Sciences at Complutense University. His work spans a wide variety of genres —video collage, video poem, video portrait, video dance, and video documentary— always approached from a perspective of conceptual and musical experimentation. Error, technical limitations, and controlled chance inspire most of his work.
In 1988, he formed the Utray-Lamadrid team with Francisco Utray, a creative duo that began its artistic career in 1988 with the presentation of the video installation Vicios Privados Beneficios Públicos at the Bideoaldia 88 festival (Tolosa, 1988), at the ARCO89 contemporary art fair in Madrid (VideoArco89), and at the exhibition hall of the Malaga College of Architects. That same year, They directed Excusa Racial, Utray-Lamadrid’s first video, with Jesús Rodríguez Lenin (El arte de los necios) contributing to the soundtrack.
In 1989, Utray-Lamadrid moved to the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and, as part of Nam June Paik’s class, produced two videos: Punto en boca and Experiencia vital concentrada.Two years later, they participated in the prestigious 1991 Young Artists Exhibition. That same year, they produced two of his most innovative videos: the video portraits Panes y Azotes and Passé Parfait.
Later, in 1992, Utray-Lamadrid was awarded the First Prize in Video Art at Madrid Capital Cultural for the dance video Siete Montañas y Siete Ríos. In 1993, following a residency at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, they completed Eifrigies Nichtstun, a pseudo-documentary video that combines images of miners and metalworkers with literary references to the dual nature —both sacred and profane— of physical labor.
In 2011, the Utray-Lamadrid video Punto en boca was included in Las Caras B de la historia del vídeo español (a traveling exhibition). That same year, Luis Lamadrid was selected for “The 8th Busan International Video Art Festival” (Seoul). In 2015, he exhibited at the Espacio Labruc gallery (Madrid) and showed several videos at the exhibition Daliludens, derrota de la rigidez (Lima).
In 2016, the Luis Lamadrid video Recuerda quién eres was selected for the 29E Festival Les Instants Vidéo (Marseille and Buenos Aires, 2016).
In 2017, Luis Lamadrid collaborated with Andrews Wax on the project Into The Machina, creating the videos Tremblement de Terre très doux sous mes pieds and Mandádome callar.In 2018, Luis Lamadrid promoted the collaborative project Chain of Changes with Andrews Wax and created the videos Day for Night, Damaged, Tiempo absoluto and Moon Phase.
In 2019, Luis Lamadrid published the poetry collections Nootrópicos (2019), Saco de azares (2019), El número es gráfico (2019), Fondo de cristal (2018), Poemas vigilantes (2018), Poemas de corta y pega(2012) and Poemas de ombligo (1990) and produced the video SONDA y 3 Pruebas de color.
In 2020, Luis Lamadrid created the videos La guerra, Las 3:30 en el interior de una patata and Virtus Maris. He published the poetry collections Tal vez imagen and Isócrono composed the soundtracks: Otro síntoma, Lo siento por ti and Interferencias.
In 2021, Luis Lamadrid collaborated with the free improvisation collective Raras Músicas and Proyecto Morrison.
In 2022, Luis Lamadrid created the video Subida al abismo with Tony Peña. He collaborated on the Enéssima project and with the electroacoustic improvisation quartet Itínere, alongside Miguel Gil and Jorge Cabadas. He also joined the interdisciplinary improvisation group LAC at the Cruce, Arte y Pensamiento Contemporáneo space.
In 2023, Utray-Lamadrid collaborated with the free improvisation collective NoDo and created the VIDEOACÚSTICA Project together with Paco Utray (videos Transducción, Naufragio and Inverso).
In 2024, the Utray-Lamadrid team produced the video Los pájaros, con Max Nitrofoska, Aitor Montes y Cuencas Vacías, featuring Max Nitrofoska, Aitor Montes, and Cuencas Vacías, based on Max Nitrofoska’s short story Cantar casi.
In 2025, Utray-Lamadrid presented the Videocústica project at the Exploratorium in Berlin; exhibition Lo poema ajunta paraules. Lo poema ajunta persones, Encontres aproximatius de Postbouesia 5NA Edició, LO PATI | CENTRE D’ART TERRES DE L’EBRE;Fiver 2025, Dance Films from Spain, Official Selection: There Was No Plan B (con Libertad Pozo); and Videoacoustic Composition 2025 at La Rosa CSA.
In 2026, Utray-Lamadrid organized the Videoacoustic Festival Espacio La Rosa, produced the vídeo Vereda tropical (Paco, Quico y Luis. París 1988-2026), create the video installation at Videoacoustic Festival at Espacio La Tortuga and the video installation and videoacoustic work at Espacio La Pahissa del Marquet. Luis Lamadrid produced the videos Lapidario and Ahora esto; después, lo otro, and, together with Paco Utray, he published the USB edition of Composiciones videoacústicas 2023-2026.
Some of his videos are included in the Hamaca catalog in Barcelona and in the LUX Collection in London.
